Mount Isarog is an Inactive Volcano With Lush Green Rainforest

Mount Isarog in Camarines Sur is a dormant but potentially active composite volcano whose last known eruption was in 1641. The Volcano rises at 1966 meters above sea level making it one of the highest rainforest mountains in Southern Luzon. It is rich in spring water because of the lush green rainforest that effectively collects heavy amount of moisture from the frequent clouds that cover it's upper portion. It also has a large concentration of virgin forest that is home to thousands of species of wild plants and animals, many of which are rare and some are endemic to the area.

Mt Isarog is about 400 kilometers southeast of Metro Manila, 20 km east of Naga City, and about 100 km northwest ofMayon Volcano It was declared a national park in 1938 and was used by the Filipino guerillas as a hideout during the Japanese occupation in WWII. It is Dubbed as Vulcan de Agua or The Water Mountain because of the many springs and streams that flow from it's slopes. It is responsible for the irrigation of many farms and plantations surrounding it and is also responsible for the supply of water to the Camsur Watersport Complex or CWC.

Mount Isarog has numerous waterfalls that naturally serve as refreshers for exhausted climbers and hikers. The Malabsay Waterfalls and the Nabuntalan Waterfalls are just some of the many waterfalls found in the area. Diverse species of plants and animals are also found here including beautiful wild orchids and the worlds largest flower, Rafflesia. Leeches are of concern here specially during the wet season so extra precaution is required. Climbing Isarog not only gives you a sense of achievement but also some unexpected experiences as well as a spectacular view of the Bicol Region.

There are two trails leading to the summit. The one on the west is the Panicuason trail which is about a 30 minute jeepney ride from Naga City. The one on the east is the Patag-patag Trail and the jump off point is Tigaon, Camarines Sur. Both trails have their own unique characteristics and challenges and perhaps it would be a good idea to try both trails for a complete Isarog experience. Information about mountain exploration can be obtained through the local DENR Protected Area Office and the Kadlagan Outdoor Shop in Naga City.

Today Mt Isarog is safe to trek compared to years ago when insurgency was high. Maybe one day it will awaken and be as active like Mayon Volcano and Bulusan Volcano. Maybe it would also have a potential to stage a major eruption perhaps similar to that of Mt Pinatubo. No one knows for sure but for now we can enjoy the beautiful nature and adventures it has to offer.
