Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Adventure

Donsol is perhaps the Bicol Region's most sought after destination because of it's whale shark interaction and manta ray watching.

The Whale Shark is the largest of the fish species that grows up to about 13 meters in length. They feed mostly on planktons and sometimes on a school of small fishes.

It became a popular tourist destination for the whale sharks that can be seen in the bordering seas of Donsol. Whale sharks are locally known as Butanding and can be seen between the months of November and June, and with their presence peaking between the months of February and May when the sea is clear and calm.

Located southwest of Legazpi, Donsol is actually a municipality of Sorsogon province, but access to it from Legazpi City has been the norm because the nearest airport to it is in Legazpi. Because of this, many people thought that Donsol is part of Legazpi or Albay province.

From the Legazpi City airport, jeepneys and minivans depart almost every hour going to this once sleepy town. Taxis are also available but are more expensive because they prefer a contract deal rather than a metered one since this would be a special trip. Resort and hotel accommodations are plenty and prices vary. Among them are Amor Farm Beach Resort, Giddy's Place Dive Resort, Hernandez Guest House, and Vitton Beach Resort. Snorkeling gears are available for rent but bringing your own equipment is strongly suggested for hygiene and health reasons.

Guidelines were established by tourism officials and professional divers on proper whale shark watching to maintain safety and to defend the giant fish from over exploitation. Swimming and interaction with these gentle giants will give you an experience you will never forget although as of late there was a news circulating that interaction with the whale shark is now prohibited for your safety and the shark's safety as well. They can now only be viewed from a water vessel like a banca (outrigger boat).

Night time activities in Donsol Sorsogon is somewhat nil except for the Night River Firefly watching which can be nice for the people who never saw fireflies in their lives. There is a fee to ride a boat along the town's river to watch fireflies. So if you're not interested, your other option is to sleep the night out early and be ready for the following day's Whale Shark watching adventure.
