Feel Corregidor and It's Past

Corregidor Island in Manila Bay was the site of a fierce battle between the American and Filipino allied forces led by General MacArthur against the advancing Japanese forces in World War 2.The infamous Death March of Bataan to Tarlac province subsequently took place after the fall of the island to the invading Japanese forces in 1942.

The island was first established by the Spanish during their era in the Philippines. It served as a fortress and penal institution as well as a watch tower for the defense of Manila against pirates and other invading forces. The island also fell under the control of the Dutch, and the British until the Spanish regained control of it. Before the start of the 1900 the Americans took control of the island and the Philippines.

Today the island is a popular tourist destination where visitors can witness the ruins, the big guns, the Malinta Tunnel which served as the headquarter of General MacArthur, and the beauty of the island itself.

The island is 48 kilometers west of Manila and daily ferry trips to the island are available and the docks are within the CCP Complex along Roxas Blvd., in Manila.
